Which type of solar panel is best for my narrowboat?

There are three types of solar panel suitable for a narrowboat:

Rigid framed solar panels. The standard panel type for use on narrowboats. Compact, light yet strong. Easy to install and use. For greater efficiency take a look at our adjustable mounting frames. These frames can be adapted to fit a curved cabin top. Alternatively try our PVC corner mounts or our aluminium brackets to attach these panels to the cabin top of your boat.
Semi flexible solar panels: These super thin panels are best where a low-windage installation is required. Semi-flexible panels can be glued to flat or curved decks. The solar cells are manufactured by SunPower (USA). The latest ‘back-contact’ technology. Greater efficiency.
Portable solar panels: For those who do not want to fit a solar panel permanently.

What size of solar panel do I need?

Trickle charging your battery. Trickle charging can generally be achieved using a 50 watt solar panel. Your battery should charge up steadily when not in use for most of the year.
To get more from your narrowboat’s solar panel system we advise fitting a 100 watt panel. Benefit from additional power in the summer months and reliable charging during the winter.
Independence from the mains hook-up can be achieved with a system of 200 watts or over.
