Which type of solar panel is best for me?

1. Motorhome owners:

  • Semi flexible solar panels: These super thin panels  are best where a low-windage installation is required. Glue these semi-flexible panels to flat or curved roofs.
  • Portable solar panels: For those who do not want to fit a solar panel permanently to the roof of the camper-van.

2. Boat owners:

  • Rigid framed solar panels. See below: The standard panel type for use on boats. Compact, light and very strong, these panels are easy to install and use. Attach to the deck using PVC corner mounts or aluminium z-brackets.
  • Semi flexible solar panels: These super thin panels  are best where a low-windage installation is required. Glue these semi-flexible panels to flat or curved decks. Greater efficiency.
  • Marine solar panels: The ultimate in rugged, efficient solar energy. You can walk on these solar panels.
  • Portable solar panels: For those who do not want to fit a permanent solar panel.

3. Caravan owners:

  • Semi flexible solar panels: These super thin panels  are best where a low-windage installation is required. Glue these semi-flexible panels to flat or curved roofs. The solar cells are manufactured using the latest ‘back-contact’ technology. Very efficient.
  • Portable solar panels: For those who do not want to fit a permanent solar panel.
  • Do not use rigid framed solar panels on caravans.

What size of solar panel do I need?

Trickle charging your battery. Trickle charging can generally be achieved using a 50 watt solar panel. Your battery should charge up steadily when not in use, for most of the year.
More solar power. To get more from your solar panel system we advise fitting a 100 watt panel. Benefit from additional power in the summer months and reliable charging during the winter.
Power independence. The average user can achieve independence from the mains hook-up with a system of 200 watts.

See our guide for more detailed information: “Fitting a solar panel. Where do I start?”.

This guide explains how to install your solar panel. We also explain how to select the correct cables, charge controller and accessories. Make sure you install a safe and secure system.

We fit all our panels with solar cables and MC4 connectors. We also supply special cables to connect your solar panel to your charge controller and battery. See these and our other installation accessories on our accessories page.
